This is a thin section of a very rare volcanic rock, Phonolite from the carbonatite volcanic complex at Kaiserstuhl, in southern Germany. This from Badberg, which I believe is the approximate centre of the ancient carbonatite rich volcano. Glassy matrix with laths of sanidine and aegirine, and well formed melanite garnets which show growth zoning. Spots of beige ?analcime (? altered nepheline) represent the feldspathoid. This slide also has an aegirine rich xenolith, which in addition to the minerals already mentioned has biotite and sphene.
Photographs below are of the actual slide you will receive.
A small sample of the rock from which this slide was cut is also usually included, sometimes this is not possible if no offcuts are available at time of sale.
The description is provided as a guide as to what to expect, but buyers should identify the rock type and minerals for themselves. ~ Some features will require a polarising microscope to view. ~ Slides are prepared with the greatest of care, ground to the correct thickness, and covered with a glass cover slip. ~ However if you are not satisfied with any slide I will refund the purchase price if you return the slide within 7 days
