This is a thin section of a Gabbro frm the centre 2 tertiary intrusion, Ardnamurchan. Collected from the higher, central part of the intrusion it represents the intermediate phase of the volcano. Both ortho- and clino- pyroxenes present, ophitic and colourful, and plagioclase feldspars, with smaller olivines now partially altered to magnetite. Much of the pyroxene in this slide is augite, for hypersthene look for pale green/pink pleochroism, often near the olivine.
Photographs below are of the actual slide you will receive.
A small sample of the rock from which this slide was cut is also usually included, sometimes this is not possible if no offcuts are available at time of sale.
The description is provided as a guide as to what to expect, but buyers should identify the rock type and minerals for themselves. ~ Some features will require a polarising microscope to view. ~ Slides are prepared with the greatest of care, ground to the correct thickness, and covered with a glass cover slip. ~ However if you are not satisfied with any slide I will refund the purchase price if you return the slide within 7 days
